Time is (of) the essence...

Thoughtful post! Time - oh yes - what a conundrum. They say it's us that pass and not time! I wrote a song about this called It's Over So Quick and is on my album. I'll send you the lyrics if you like.

"Retaining clarity over what we are doing when we, for example, choose to do one thing rather than another, embraces this notion of scarcity and value and personal judgement."

You just articulated a thought that only occurred to me very recently. I suppose that's kind of what "making most of the time we have together" really means. The time itself isn't any different - an hour is "worth" the same now as it might have been with the same person a year ago, but maybe retaining the consciousness that the hour is precious makes it feel more valuable. We take for granted the value of another person's time at our peril.

Chandramoon - indeed, time is going to keep going long after we have passed. Yes, please, I would love to see your lyrics!

Wenders - I think you hit the nail on the head. Periodically, we can become very aware of how "valued" our time is - unfortunately, this awareness can strike too late like when we recognise a problem has already significant proportions or when the opportunity to give time has been taken away from us. Looking from the opposite perspective, we can become likewise acutely aware of the difference that another person's time means to us. Hopefully, we recognise that before it is too late to acknowledge it.

I think what I am trying to say and have been thinking about recently is actually incredibly basic: sometimes, the greatest compliment we can give a person is to say thank you for their time and the greatest gift we can give them, is our own time.

Thank you, as always for commenting.
Here are the lyrics - you can hear a 2 min clip of the tune on CDbaby (see the link on Myspace) You can listen without having to buy by the way! Let me know what you think.

It’s Over So Quick (It’s really obscene)

One minute a child
Next day an old man
You’ve gone off the rails
You do what you can
So many lovers
You’ve almost lost count
You wake up each morning
Then it’s over and out

Birth
Death
Life flashes between
Marvellous moments
Nightmares and dreams
Birth
Death
Life flashes between
It’s over so quick
It’s really obscene

Everyone tells you
Work hard at school
Do all your homework
Be nobody’s fool
As far as I know
You’ve only one life
Two point one children
A beautiful wife

Birth
Death
Life flashes between
Marvellous moments
Nightmares and dreams
Birth
Death
Life flashes between
It’s over so quick
It’s really obscene

Go to the office
Jump on a train
Work till you drop
Then do it again
Nine to five drains you
It’s such a long grind
Leaving no space
To free your own mind

Capture the moment
You can’t get it back
Do it your own way
Throw off the flack
One day at a time
Remember your breath
Because life flashes by
Between birth and death

Birth
Death
Life flashes between
Marvellous moments
Nightmares and dreams
Birth
Death
Life flashes between
It’s over so quick
It’s really obscene

It’s over so quick
